This was wonderful, Imogen, thank you so much! The canal is now on our list of places to visit. I heard a cuckoo here in our garden next to the common last weekend. There are lots of trees around the common and I was outside gardening when I heard it. I was transfixed; in fact I couldn’t believe my ears! I had never heard one before, which shows how rare they are. My neighbour is an ecologist and she heard it too , the day before, and recorded it. I haven’t heard it since. Keep up the good work - Bracken and Wrack is a joy. Have a good weekend. Looking forward to your next adventures. I know Geldeston Locks, must visit again soon!

Oh Imogen! I love this so much. It actually makes me cry reading about the may traditions that used to be so readily celebrated in our land. And all these wonderful descriptions of the countryside xxx

Thank you Julie ❤️ Geldeston Locks Inn on the Norfolk/Suffolk border is wonderful for keeping alive the old traditions and we went to their event which included participatory May carol-singing with a folk singer, mummers, maypole dancing and morris dancers in a real seasonal feast of sound and colour. Thank goodness for places like that! X

Thank you Sally-Ann, it’s lovely to hear from you and to know that there’s at least one cuckoo active in South Norfolk! I have been lucky enough to hear many in my time but their scarcity now is a good lesson in not taking anything for granted, savouring the wonder instead. Lovely that your neighbour was able to record the evocative sound too. Yes, do go to the canal if you can. The towpath has been opened up through two or three miles of its length and makes a nice walk, especially at sunset if the day has been fine X

I have been on the Isle of Mull this week and pleased to report that I heard quite a few cuckoos in different parts of the island. In fact I was marvelling at hearing so much bird song everywhere and so little in the way of traffic or human activity.
