Bluebells celebrating May Day by the alder carr, 1 May 2024. Perhaps a little more peaceful than if Snap the Dragon was involved :-)
With mirth and joy we greet returning Spring
The winter’s past and all its trials o’er
We hear the wild birds’ song, and see the flowers that bring
Pleasure to all alike, both rich and poor
(May Day greeting by Costessey Gylde’s ‘Mock Mayor’)
Hello and welcome, Between The Moons friends!
Let’s hold our gathering this time under the newly-green hawthorn boughs and have a chat while we wait for those tightly furled buds to burst in a whoosh of musky delight.
Today’s topic came to me while I was researching May Day lore, but I had the feeling that it might ramble all over the place so I’ve decided to record these thoughts as spoken word instead of trying to write it all down.
I’m pretty sure that each of the things I’ve been thinking about and the connections that seem to be arriving could probably become something longer and more considered, but in the spirit of spontaneity I’m just going to set the voice recorder going and see what happens. That way it will be a surprise to us both and you’ll perhaps gain a little insight into the swirling mish-mash that I like to call ‘the creative process’ here at Bracken & Wrack :-)
