I know, Lara. What a story! I don’t think many of us today can imagine how patient they had to be.

Imogen, what a lovely read for this cold morning ( well it is here in Somerset).

I can definitely see some of you in your Grandmother.

I loved to hear of Old Glory dancing, such a wonderful thing to see.

Your soup recipe interested me because apart from the butter beans , the recipe was almost identical from a soup my mother in law used to make when she was alive. She used lentils instead of butter beans. She said it was a very traditional Armenian soup with coconut milk her modern addition.

It made me think about how many recipes must be repeated all over the world. But of course, Sofrito is used as a base for dishes all over the world and as you rightly said more cafes and restaurants could easily make vegan soups!

Thank you for your posts that open the doorway to our past.

Nikki, what a lovely thoughtful comment to read, thank you. How interesting about the similarity of the recipe to an Armenian one! It’s fascinating to think about the overlaps and of course to weave stories about how recipes may have travelled from place to place. Elsewhere in the interview with my grandma she talks about the Irish labourers who came to work on her parents’ farm when times were hard and I wondered whether that was one of the ways that things like recipes (and indeed other lore) spread?

Imogen, I’m finally reading this after a definite Snow Full Moon here and just right as a respite from the deep, deep snow and cold. Waiting 4 years, gosh. And you’ve shown me another example of Christians swapping out to suit themselves, the Virgin Mary for Ceres in this case.

The fens are just becoming more surreal in my mind. How to describe it but liminal? I agree, soup is just the thing pretty much anytime but in the heat of summer. I will definitely try it.

Hello Imogen, just thought I would tell you that I made the soup.....enough for 3 days and we have just finished it today! We both loved this recipe and I, being the soup maker, will definitely be making it again. It was just right for this cold bright day! I always enjoy reading your posts, so full of interesting facts and tales! I've just found out on Ancestry that a lot of my ancestors on my mother's side came from Norfolk. Happy Sunday! 😊

It was wonderful to read of Holley in Egypt

One of my ancestors was there at the same time. I wonder if they crossed paths?

I’ve been making the crumble a lot lately but using plums from my garden. Delicious!

Thank you for this lovely writing of memory, Imogen! Holly and Mabel's story is so enchanting and the Old glory Dancers are fascinating with their history, along with their dance. It was so nice to read about the chilly evening as we are having such hot weather here in Florida. It didn't stop me from making the soup recipe though... I followed the recipe through and it is absolutely delicious!!Thank you for taking the time to bring such wonderful writing to your readers (along with great recipes!!).....I hope to hear more of Mabel's memories in the future!
